Set up a client for HamText

Introduction.

I've installed a server on 44net for hams to be able to send texts to each other via cell or PC using the XMPP protocols, formerly known as Jabber. This tutorial will help guide you as to how to make an account and how to configure a client on your device so you may participate

First thing to do:

The first thing you'll want to do is create your user account on the system. You may do this via the web by going to https://n1uro.com:5280/register/ and keep the trailing / after register or else it will fail!

  • Select "Register a Jabber account".
  • For your username enter your callsign.
  • Select your password - enter it in again for verification
  • Click on "Register"
  • Now you have your account on the server and you're ready for your client configuration!

    Android Phone:

I've found the app Xabber available in the Google Play Store works quite well. Install that. Add your username which will be callsign@n1uro.com and then your password. Accept the SSL cert that will be presented to you. It's self signed by the server itself... so don't worry. Search for n1uro@n1uro.com to find me to test. Ask on packet BBS to see who else may be on too. You'll be able to text with them on this system hosted on a 44net IP.

    IPhone/IPAD:

We've found in the app Store Monal works quite well. Install that. Do not Use Quick setup. Go to this link https://n1uro.com:5280/register/ <-- must include the trailing / and create you and account.
On Monal: Hit ADD NEW ACCOUNT add your username which will be callsign@n1uro.com in the Jabber ID, and then your password . As server add n1uro.com, unmark TLS and leave the other setup as it is. Hit enable then save. Search for n1uro@n1uro.com to find me to test. Ask on packet BBS to see who else may be on too. You'll be able to text with them on this system hosted on a 44net IP.
    *Thanks VE2OM/VE2PKT for the draft.*

Setting up Pidgin on Windows OR linux:

I liked Pidgin because it will show you who's on a cellphone. It has ports to both Windows and for Linux using the GTK libs. The type of account you want to select is XMPP which is"Jabber". You add your username and password... the server will be n1uro.com. Again search for your contact(s) and add them accordingly.

    Kopete for KDE:

Kopete for KDE is unique as it has the ability to create accounts so you may try it and skip the web registration. If it does fail then go to the web and register your account. The rest of the config will be parallel to that of Pidgin.

    Who's registered:

I've made a CGI which will show you who's registered. It auto updates nightly. You may find it here...
OR you may use our web client here.

    Final notes.

Login and kick the tires... tell your friends especially those you can NOT text from your standard smartphone texting. The system _may_ work best if you can source as a 44net IP but it should still work as I've tested public IPs from across the globe with SP2L and it seems to work just fine. File transfers may work too, depending on your client. Some clients don't use the old name of "jabber" however they call it "xmpp". That's all I can think of for now... 73!

    Back home.
