This page and site is dedicated to the works and legacy of Brian Kantor

Brian Kantor - Mr. 44-net
Brian defined what a gentleman and a scholar was! He spent almost 50 years
in the I.T. department as a upper level manager at the University of California
in San Diego (ucsd.edu). While he knew linux and other variants of unix, he
preferred BSD as his operating system of choice... and for decent reasons.

Brian took over and fully administrated 44/8 for decades until the last
bit of the block's /10 was sold to Amazon which caused a lot of ire with
some people however as most amateurs know since the beginning of time -
so to speak - this was the IP space ham radio operators used to route
IP via RF and through ip within ip encapsulation (which Brian also
developed along with SMTP and NNTP both better known as eMail and usenet
usegroups respectively). He wanted to use this money to do good for other
and to help perhaps fund other group's good ideas in the spirit of the
hobby of amateur radio, and computing.

Brian also was insturmental in forming ARDC who's goal is to take the
money from the sale of 44.192.0.0/10 and make donations where they'd
hopefully do the most good for the hobby of amateur radio and IP. He donated
a good amount of money already through ARDC to TAPR in regards to funding
some of what they do for younger hams... to which he was hoping I would
have won my election when I ran for board of directors in TAPR.

Unfortunately, this great person was found DOA from an apparent coronary
by Dave Somes - WB6TFC who had a key to Brian's place and did a wellness
check on him when Brian failed to respond to emails. For those like me
who knew Brian he almost replied to all emails within 15 minutes no matter
what time of day! I also had some emails that were unanswered by Brian but
they weren't that important. Dave found Brian on the floor and called the
appropriate officials which Dave arrived there on November 21, 2019 so
who knows how long it's been Brian was on the floor. My first unanswered
email to him was on November 18, 2019.

Brian was a great friend and mentor to us all and held back any signs of
being egotistical whatsoever! He was always very approachable to all who
were in need of help. I felt honored in helping him develop and test some
of the tools he created for the good in administering AmprNet even though
I have some of my own that work and link with his. We shared other tricks
and tips as things changed.

Our most recent threads were along the lines of personal health however
I don't recall him mentioning anything heart related. With a pressure
reading of 220 over 160 it should have been me being SK with stats like
that. I did know he was not getting much sleep at all due to being in
pain from other issues, but never did I know of any critical heart issues.
It's sad when I think the first I had an unanswered email was on Monday
November 18, and he wasn't found until Thursday November 21. Very tragic
and lonely way to enter the next dimension.

Rest in peace my long time friend and thank you for the great things you
not only have shared with me, but with the world as a whole! As your great
friend Phil Karn said, you can't be replaced.
